The City of Leeds Pipe Band and Masterworks Choral<\/a> will be special guests for an event being hosted by Leeds Male Voice Choir<\/a>, perform songs of remembrance the evening before Remembrance Sunday in support of the Royal British Legion<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Featuring some of the finest musical talents in the city the Festival of Remembrance\u00a0will include a range of poignant music including popular music, hymns and songs\u00a0from the first world war. The celebrated special guests all hail from Leeds including\u00a0the City of Leeds Pipe Band and international touring choir Masterworks Chorale.<\/p>\n

Leeds Male Voice Choir have a long tradition of marking remembrance and\u00a0supporting military charities dating back to the choir\u2019s formation during the First\u00a0World War. Both choirs and the pipe band are in final preparations for Festival of Remembrance, in support\u00a0of the Royal British Legion\u2019s Poppy Appeal<\/a> on Saturday 10 November at St George\u2019s\u00a0Church in Leeds on the centenary of the end of the First World War.<\/p>\n

The choir\u2019s roots sit in the mining industry and date back to the time of the First\u00a0World War; formed as Broom Excelsior Male Voice Choir the choir\u2019s first\u00a0performance in September 1916 raised funds for soldiers injured in the First World\u00a0War before a Leeds AFC match. First performing in Leeds Town Hall in 1919, the\u00a0choir gained momentum in their early years recording at the BBC and singing as part\u00a0of Remembrance commemorations at the cenotaph at Whitehall in London in 1924.\u00a0With coal miners exempt from conscription, the choir continued to perform throughout the Second World War, often at Mill Hill Chapel on Park Row in Leeds\u00a0City Centre, raising funds for those injured during armed conflict.<\/p>\n

Under the Direction of Tim Knight since 2014, Leeds Male Voice Choir has trodden a\u00a0different path to other male voice choir\u2019s, casting aside brightly coloured blazers and\u00a0welsh hymns, in favour of a modern approach with diverse repertoire drawing\u00a0influences from North America, Scandinavia and the Baltic. With a membership of\u00a0almost sixty men, Leeds Male Voice Choir continues to honour the fallen through the\u00a0tradition of remembrance – which has been an important part of the choir\u2019s history for\u00a0over one hundred years.<\/p>\n

The City of Leeds Pipe Band can trace its lineage back to the Yorkshire Jocks, and the Scottish Regimental Association of Yorkshire. Men from the regiment fought during WW1 and the band participated in many memorial events over years.\"\"<\/p>\n

In 2017 Leeds Male Voice Choir travelled to Belgium in their first international\u00a0engagement in some thirty years performing and paying their respects at the\u00a0Commonwealth War Graves at Tyne Cott Cemetery near Passchendaele, the largest\u00a0cemetery for Commonwealth forces in the world. Having performed Tim Knight\u2019s\u00a0setting of Christina Rossetti\u2019s They Lie at Rest<\/em>, several choir members found the\u00a0graves of relatives that had fallen in the Great War and were able to pay their\u00a0respects. The choir also performed Abide with Me<\/em> at the Last Post Ceremony at the\u00a0Menin Gate in Ypres, in an act of remembrance which has taken place every day\u00a0since 1928.<\/p>\n

Proceeds from the Festival of Remembrance<\/em> will be donated to the Royal British\u00a0Legion\u2019s Poppy Appeal<\/a>. The Legion was founded by veterans after the First World\u00a0War. A century on from the start of the conflict, they still help and support servicemen\u00a0and women, veterans, and their families in almost every aspect of daily life.<\/p>\n

Featuring both music and words marking remembrance the choir will perform music\u00a0including The Lord\u2019s My Shepard<\/em>, Abide with Me<\/em>, A Long Way to Tipperary, Roses of\u00a0Picardy, Going Home and They Lie at Rest<\/em> supported by City of Leeds Pipe Band\u00a0and Masterworks Chorale. Musical Director Tim Knight says \u201cWe\u2019re looking forward\u00a0to supporting the Poppy Appeal with a diverse collection of moving music for\u00a0remembrance and reflection in the centenary year of the First World War. We are\u00a0anticipating a memorable evening for all concerned.\u201d<\/p>\n
