We are delighted to be involved again with The Rob Burrow Leeds Marathon on Sunday 12 May 2024 that will honour Leeds Rhinos legend Rob Burrow MBE and help raise vital funds for those affected by motor neurone disease. The Rob Burrow Leeds Marathon has been inspired by former Leeds Rhinos captain Kevin Sinfield OBE and his fundraising efforts in recent years in support of his former team mate and friend Rob.

We will be playing on the central grass verge opposite Boddington Avenue Leeds 16 from around 9.30 in the morning

Looking at our participation, over the years, at @Ilkey Carnival it is hard to imagine that COVID hit 4 years ago and we were unable to play. A time which affected us all. How time flies!
Fast forward to this Bank Monday, 6 May, and we shall once again be taking up the mantle and be joining in the ‘Mardi Gras’ Parade with the many others who delight and entertain the crowds. A great, fun day out for all the family but if you are coming along, be sure to come early! It’s a busy one.

This Sunday, 17th March is Leeds St Patricks Parad

This Sunday, 17th March is Leeds St Patricks Parade, so why not come down to Leeds City Centre and join us. The Parade starts at 10.30 and this year we are a little further back in the Parade, but leading is North Yorkshire Fire & Rescue Service Pipeband. No doubt we'll all catch up for a pint of Guinness afterwards. This photo was taken by Tom Blackwell back in 2014.

Burns Night is a time to enjoy Scottish traditions and celebrate the renowned poet Robert Burns with a classic combination of haggis, neeps, tatties, some reciting of poetry, and maybe even a warming dram. The flying of the Scottish flag takes the band back to June 2022, when it played at Balmoral for the late Queen’s Platinum Jubilee. It seems only yesterday when it joined the nation in helping celebrate 70 years of her unwavering service. Playing at Balmoral was an honour, yet a humbling experience.

Let’s not only raise a glass to celebrate St Andrews Day but also, in remembrance of our late Queen, Elizabeth II, who passed away peacefully in the place she loved the most, Balmoral.

This Sunday, 12 November, sees our poignant return

This Sunday, 12 November, sees our poignant return to Thorner for their Remembrance Day Parade. We are always honoured to be asked to take part and to help lead the parade, marching on together with members of the Thorner and Scarcroft British Legion, as well as cubs and scouts from the village.

The day is one of unity, in remembrance for all those who gave their lives for the peace and freedom we enjoy today. For those who will be joining us, we will be setting off from the Ford at 10am and will finish at St Peter’s Church for the Memorial Service.

Have we been quiet? Not at Thorner Victory Hall, our exciting new base for the band. A fantastic location with easy access, free parking, and great facilities. Here, the band is in practice for its upcoming engagements. The next one being at the Thorner Remembrance Service on Sunday 12 November (details to follow).

Chanter practice for beginners and pipe members is held every Monday evening from 7pm to 9pm, with a full band practice on Thursday evenings from 8pm to 10pm.

August has flown by and we cannot believe that the festive C-word has been mentioned several times. We hope that all our followers, friends and colleagues are having a great summer break.
No prizes for guessing where our next engagement is. We will be heading out to the @Otley Vintage Transport Extravaganza (OVTE) this Sunday, 10 September, playing at 12.00noon and 2.30pm (opens at 10am). “We’ll Meet Again” and we surely will! This

“We’ll Meet Again” and we surely will! This Sunday, 25 June, sees our return to Leeds City Centre for Leeds Armed Forces Day. A day in which we all come together in recognition and celebration of the service provided by our regular and reservist soldiers, sailors, airmen, and marines, past and present, and the families that have supported them. We are honoured to be taking part.

The free event, which will span Briggate, will see stalls, stands and exhibitions, plus activities for the whole family to get involved. For those wishing to hear us on the day, we will be playing at 11.45am and again at 1pm. We hope you can join us!

Photo shows our piper, Gordon, who managed a wee photo with The Daisy Belles back in 2019. We look forward to hearing them, once again, entertain the crowd with their harmonic renditions.

At Otley Carnival on Saturday, we asked for water and got it, though not quite the way we imagined. They say you should be careful what you wish for 😊 Nonetheless, a thoroughly enjoyable day, leading the parade.

Rounding off a very busy May, despite glorious sun

Rounding off a very busy May, despite glorious sunshine and whilst wearing full Highland dress, the band was in fine fettle leading the Pudsey Carnival Parade from Queens Park. The parade kept the crowds captivated as it headed through the town centre. Live music, performances and entertainment was on hand for all the family to enjoy. A great day out was had by all!

Last Sunday the Band play for the Rob Burrow MND marathon at the split point for the half marathon and the full marathon in Leeds
We took up position on the junction of what was at the time lacking spectators for the run. Before long the area was full of people and for once we were happy to take a back seat.
The amount of support for the race was truly phenomenal and the noise from the spectators clapping and cheering drowned out the sound of the band as two great legends, Kevin Sinfield and Rob Burrow passed by.

As the crowd gathered the band was squeezed out and moved further away from the junction but continued to play for the runners as they continued to pass on what was a very warm day.

The band would like to congratulate everyone who took part on Sunday and help raise funds for the various charities involved, especially The Rob Burrow Centre for MND Appeal and wish Rob, Kevin and not forgetting Robs wife Lindsey all the best, keep up the good work!

As you do not always get to see behind the scenes at such a prestigious event, we felt to share photos of what goes on behind and in front of the curtain before the show. The comarderie, the collaboration and the preparation in which everyone is involved. A great atmosphere, a sharing of talent, no one competing, everyone aligning to deliver a moving performance to the audience, one which we hope they will not forget.
It was a wonderful day and was enjoyed from start to finish by everyone involved, highlighted by a group photo with André before joining the rest of the performers at the after drinks party. All the hard work put in by our Pipe Major Andrew and the band members brought together on the evening, resulted in a performance we are all proud of.
Special thanks go to Lady Jane and Stuart Liddle for performing with the band on the evening and @kasioda for the impromptu lesson in non-chicken wing twirling.

The City of Leeds Pipe Band will be there on Sunday to support,entertain and keep spirits high for the runners as they make their way round the inaugural Rob Burrow Leeds Marathon. Join us on the corner of Farrar Lane and Church Lane Adel where we will be playing from 9.30 untill 12.30

The 2023 marathon is raising funds for The Rob Burrow Centre for Motor Neurone Disease Appeal and the Leeds Hospitals Charity, as well as a host of other causes.

"The support for the MND community through the Rob Burrow Leeds Marathon has been fantastic," Kevin Sinfield said.

"Through the event we are able to provide hope for a community that have been in the dark for so long.

"MND isn't incurable, it's just been underfunded, so to host a marathon in honour of my mate Rob and all those living with MND is incredible," he added.

Spats cleaned, sporrans brushed, uniforms spotless and shoes cleaned with a shine you can see your face in! Not that we don’t do this every time for our performances, but it is our second time of being on stage with @andrerieu at the @firstdirectarena in Leeds and everything must be perfect for the concert. With our last practice done and dusted, we are now set for an exhilarating evening on Thursday joining André, Manoe and the Orchestra on stage. On its 10th Anniversary of the signing of The Char

On its 10th Anniversary of the signing of The Charter of the Commonwealth, a new Flag of Peace was unveiled in Leeds by The Lord Mayor of Leeds, Councillor Robert Gettings. Members of the public were invited to join him on Monday the 13th of March to help mark the occasion, along with our very own Sam Westerman who played Highland Cathedral during the ceremony.
The Commonwealth Charter is considered one of the most important documents in the organisation’s history. Signed by our late Queen Elizabeth II, the Commonwealth Charter sets out the values and aspirations that unite the Commonwealth’s 56 independent countries and the 2.5 billion people who live there. Something you have wanting to do for a long time b

Something you have wanting to do for a long time but never thought it could be you? Learning the bagpipes does not need to be an expensive hobby, we can help with free tutorship and advise on what you need, when you need it.

With the intention of joining the pipe band, the group provides the ideal place to learn and the tutors to bring you along. Once you are ready to play in the pipe band you will be supplied with a uniform that will be yours to look after.

To get started on the piping journey, and whilst lessons are free, we ask that the chanter and tutor book are obtained through the College of Piping https://bit.ly/NPCStarterPack This will help form the basis of your training and give you everything you need to start playing this great instrument.

A tuition class for beginners and improvers is held on Monday evenings at 7pm at Thorner Victory Hall LS14 3EY. The pipe band meets on Thursday evenings at 8 pm in the Village Hall, Main Street, Scholes, Leeds. LS15 4DN for its main practice.

Our heartfelt congratulations
to Stuart Liddell who received an MBE in King Charles III’s New Years’ Honours, for services to Piping and Music Education. Most importantly, for bringing musicians across the country together with the playing of his music, Diu Regnare, specially composed for Queen Elizabeth II’s Platinum Jubilee in June. We were honoured to play with Stuart at Balmoral Castle & Estate for the Jubilee and again at Leeds United in November for their Remembrance day. A truly nice, genuine person, whom is an inspiration to others, freely giving his time and who is always openly approachable for any questions posed.
Well done Stuart! So very well deserved.

Latha fèill Anndrais sona dhuibh ~ Happy St Andrews Day to you all!
St Andrew has been celebrated in Scotland for over one thousand years, with feasts being held in his honour as far back as the year 1000 AD. However, it wasn’t until 1320, when Scotland’s independence was declared with the signing of The Declaration of Arbroath, that he officially became Scotland’s patron saint. Since then St Andrew has become an integral part of Scottish society.
Many of the old Scottish regiments took inspiration from him adding the Saltire to their regimental cap badges. Our predecessors, The Scottish Regimental Association of Yorkshire "Yorkshire Jocks" had many members, those who served in The Cameron Highlanders, Seaforth Highlanders, Black Watch and the Gordon Highlanders. The design of "The Jocks" cap badge combined many of the designs from the regimental badges the men served with. Interestingly, the Cameron's were formed in 1793 with Queen Victoria adding the ‘Queen’s Own’ to their title in 1873.
In 1961, the regiment was amalgamated with The Seaforth Highlanders to form The Queen’s Own Highlanders. Here are the cap badges from the regiments, including our predecessors, the Yorkshire Jocks.

Today is Unique Talent Day. Though all of the band's drummers and pipers are uniquely talented, here is our Bass Drummer Amanda who has another passion, playing Barrel organs. She is due to go to Germany over the Christmas break and collect her very own. When asked, Amanda said "Unfortunatley I dont have any Scottish Tunes but I intend getting some once I get my organ home, particularly Highland Cathedral which will be one of the first I get. There are also Scotland the Brave, Black Bear and a few others arranged for the organ that I will get later." Here's looking back to the 5th November when we were proud to play at Elland Road with our special guest, Stewart Liddle, for the 4th Battalion The Parachute Regiment - 4 PARA 's Remembrance Day. A moving time for the Falkland veterans who were there to commemorate the 40th anniversary of the end of the conflict. It was an absolute honour to be asked to play for them.

The band is made up of volunteers of all ages who enjoy the playing of pipes or drums, and we would welcome new members either experienced or beginners to join us.
Tuition is free and available for anyone who has an ambition to play We currently have vacancies for both pipers and drummers.

As the clocks go back an hour this weekend in the UK, let us turn the clock back a little further to the 1970's. Here's a photo of the Band leading the Leeds Lord Mayors' Parade, something we had the pleasure of doing over several decades, taking pride in supporting and promoting our home, the City of Leeds, for over 60 years. We have carried the name of the City south to Windsor Castle and north to @balmoral_castle, supporting local events such as the @leedsafd, @theparachuteregiment 4 PARA and the @royalbritishlegion as well as partnering with André Rieu, playing at the First Direct Arena back in 2017.
