Farewell to Bruce Urquhart

The Band are sad to say farewell to long standing Piper Bruce Urquhart.

Bruce joined the Band during 1994 and proved to be a loyal and regular attender throughout his time with us.

He has decided to return to his beloved South of England but we hope that he will visit us in Leeds in the future and join us once again on engagements.

We wish Bruce all the best for his future.

2012 Events

Following the very busy schedule of events attended over the current and past few years, the City of Leeds Pipe band are already looking forward to another busy year in 2012.

The City of Leeds Pipe Band are well known in the North,East,West and South Yorkshire areas and do travel to Nottinghamshire,Lancashire and other regions as required.

A Yorkshire Vintage Transport Extravagansa

Th City of Leeds Pipe Band have accepted the invitation to perform at this years Otley Vintage Transport Extravaganza to be held on 11th September 2011 at Knotford Nook which is situated on the the Pool Road at Otley,West Yorkshire.

The event has grown over the years and around 500 vehicles ranging from steam Engines to push bikes are expected to attend this family event.Attractions include classic and veteran cars and motorbikes,heavy and light commercial vehicles,steam engines,childrens amusements,trade stands etc.

Otley is a thriving market town and lies on the boundary of North and West Yorkshire,10 miles from Leeds,alongside the River Wharfe.

This is another first time event for the band and we look forward to an interesting day.

Nearing the end of another busy season

We near the end of our Summer Season and are all looking forward to the annual break at the end of the month.

We have had some really good weather for most of the engagements.It was good to return to Burton Leonard near Ripon in North Yorkshire after a braek of a few years.This and the event at Broughton Hall, Skipton, North Yorkshire,were perhaps the warmest of all.

Last weekend at Holbeck and Bramley,both suburbs of Leeds,the weather was disappointing however the rain held off during our performances.

We return to pratices at the end of August and the learners classes re-start on 5th September.

We are already taking bookings for 2012 and will post these details on the events page shortly.

Another first for the City of Leeds Pipe Band

The City of Leeds Pipe Band has been invited to lead the procession at the annual Knaresborough Bed Race.This annual community event is famous for its colour and pagentry.

Thousands of spectators line the route whilst up to 90 teams of 1 bed,6 runners and 1 passenger make their way through the North Yorkshire market town of Knaresboroughto the start point.

This ancient north of England town is situated in an area of outstanding beauty alongside the River Nidd.

Another Yorkshire Game Show

The City of Leeds Pipe Band has been invited to attend the 2011 Yorkshire Game Show to be held on 29th. and 30th. May within the grounds of Harewood House on the outskirts of Leeds. Harewood House is the home of the Earl and Countess of Harewood.

The Yorkshire Game Show is a traditional North Country Show with a variety of events for all the family.

This is the Bands first visit to the Show which attracts visitors from around the North of England and other parts of the Country and abroad.

The Band will provide a displays during the morning and early afternoon of both days.

North Yorkshire Village Gala

We have accepted the invitation to take part in the Burton Leonard Village Gala 2011.

Burton Leonard lies between Harrogate and Ripon in North Yorkshire,and we take great pleasure in participating in this local community event with the emphasis being on the local children,who all take part in the fancy dress parade and numerous competitions held on the day and during the previous week.

The afternoon finishes with homemade teas and a visit to the fairground.

St. Patricks Day Parade opens our 2011 season

The annual St. Patricks day Parade through the centre of Leeds heralded the start of our 2011 season.

Although the morning started with rain,by the time the parade set off promptly at 1100hrs,the sun had appeared and continued for the remainder of the day.

having completed the march through the City we arrived back at the Millenium Square in front of the Leeds Civic Centre and led the parade around the square before dismissing.

The entertainment arranged by the Leeds Irish Centre continued for the remainder of the day in this area with everybody in high spirits.

Our next engagement will be leading the Scouts St. Georges Day Parade through Horsforth 1st May.

Three Generations make the Band a real Family affair

For the first time last season, the Band were able to boast three generations of the same family performing in the Drum Corps.

For a number of years, Grandfather Don Wilson, who has been a stalwart of the Corps since 1974, was joined by his daughter Michelle in 1986. Michelle, who was our fist female member, had attended engagements since an early age before becoming a competent side drummer. Following a break to get married and progress her career, she returned to the fold in 2008 accompanied at rehearsals by her daughter Natasha who became interested in Tenor Drumming as she wanted a ‘different’ hobby. Now a full playing member of the Band, Natasha hopes to, one day, grow up to be a Piper!!!! She would also recommend the Band to any other young people who have an interest in music and would like a different type of hobby in a friendly environment.

Pipers Pay Tribute to Robbie Burns
